Bringing a Relative to the United States

The quickest family-based method of immigration is through a petition filed by an immediate relative. For your relative to sponsor you, they must meet specific criteria.

• They must be a documented U.S. citizen.
• They must prove they can financially support you at 125% above the current poverty level.
• They must by able to provide proof of your relationship.

The relatives that may be sponsored by a U.S. Citizen are:

• Spouse (spouse or fiancée visa)
• Unmarried child of any age (children's visa)
• Married child of any age
• Sibling (sponsor is at least 21)
• Parent (sponsor is at least 21)

The relatives that may be sponsored by a lawful permanent resident include:

• Unmarried child less than 21 years old
• Spouse

Family-Sponsored Preference Categories

If you chose to come to the United States through family immigration, you must obtain an immigrant visa number. Potential immigrants are classified into categories based on a preference system. The parents, spouses and unmarried children (under age 21) of a citizen do not have to wait for a number. Individuals in the remaining categories must wait for an available visa number according to preferences.

Third Preference: Married children of citizens.

Fourth Preference: Siblings of adult citizens.
